22 Seaports Selected For Honors In AAPA’S 2008 Communications Awards Program
Port of Los Angeles Claims Top Award
The leading trade association representing public ports in the Western Hemisphere-American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA)-will present communications awards to 22 seaports for exemplary public relations at its 42nd annual Port Awards luncheon on Wednesday, Sept. 24. The awards luncheon, which recognizes AAPA-member port authorities for achievements in various aspects of their operations, will be held in conjunction with AAPA's 2008 Annual Convention in Anchorage, Alaska, Sept. 21-25. Winners of AAPA's environmental improvement and facilities engineering awards programs will be announced later this summer. This year's communications awards competition attracted 156 entries from 33 ports in the United States and Canada. Thirty-three public relations professionals from the Washington, D.C.-area spent a combined 136 hours judging the entries at AAPA headquarters in Alexandria, Va. In total, the independent panel of judges scored 68 entries for recognition, including 16 for Awards of Excellence, 38 for Awards of Merit and 14 for Honorable Mentions. To acknowledge the most outstanding performer in the communications competition, each year AAPA presents a trophy in the form of a large glass globe to the port that earns the most award points from the public relations judges. This year, AAPA's Dan Maynard Communications Award for Overall Program Excellence will be presented to the Port of Los Angeles, which was selected for winning three Awards of Excellence - in the categories of special events and miscellaneous - and five Awards of Merit - in the categories of overall campaign, promotional materials, videos and miscellaneous. The port also earned two Honorable Mention recognitions - in the categories of special events and ad series. The top communications award was renamed by AAPA's Public Relations Committee in 2004 after the late Dan Maynard, the committee's former colleague and communications director for the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. Below is a complete list of all Communications Awards Program winners and entry titles.

About AAPA
Founded in 1912, AAPA today represents 160 of the leading seaport authorities in the United States, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean and more than 300 sustaining and associate members, firms and individuals with an interest in seaports. As a critical link for access to the global marketplace, each year, Western Hemisphere seaports generate trillions of dollars of economic activity, support the employment of millions of people and, in 2008, imported and exported more than 7.8 billion tons of cargo, valued at $8.6 trillion, including food, clothing, medicine, fuel and building materials, as well as consumer electronics and toys. The volume of cargo shipped by water is expected to dramatically increase by 2020 and the number of passengers traveling through our seaports will continue to grow. To meet these demands, the AAPA and its members are committed to keeping seaports navigable, secure and sustainable.
