ALEXANDRIA, Va. (July 31, 2006) – The American Association of Port Authorities, the leading organization representing public ports in the Western Hemisphere, has selected 27 seaports to be recognized for exemplary projects, programs and initiatives at its annual awards program. The awards, for achievements in communications, environmental improvement and facilities engineering, will be presented to winning ports at a Sept. 13 luncheon in conjunction with AAPA’s 2006 Annual Convention in New Orleans, which runs Sept. 10-14.

AAPA Chairman Bernard S. Groseclose, Jr. (who is also president/CEO of the South Carolina State Ports Authority) and AAPA President Kurt Nagle will present engraved plaques to representatives of:

  • the Port of Long Beach (Calif.), co-winner of this year’s Comprehensive Environmental Management competition, for the port’s “Green Port Policy” submission;

  • the Port of Portland (Ore.), also co-winner of the Comprehensive Environmental Management competition, for the port’s “Environmental Programs” submission;

  • the Virginia Port Authority, winner of this year’s Environmental Enhancement competition, for the port’s “Air Emissions Reduction Program” submission;

  • Port Manatee (Fla.), winner of this year’s Environmental Mitigation competition, for the port’s “Seagrass Mitigation and Management Area” submission;
