Bigger ships hauling more cargo than ever is a fact of life at most seaports today. To better cope with the challenges of increasing demand for goods, for cargo volume peaks and “surges,” and potential shortages of land and equipment when these peaks and surges occur, the American Association of Port Authorities - the unified and recognized voice of seaports in the Americas - will focus on boosting cargo-handling productivity during the first business session at its 104th Annual Convention and Expo in Miami, Nov. 2-4.
Titled “Partnering to Optimize the Supply Chain,” the session will be moderated by 2014-15 AAPA Chairwoman of the Board Kristin Decas, who is also the port director and CEO of Southern California’s Port of Hueneme. Panelists include the senior vice president of Majestic Realty Co., Fran Inman; the chief commercial officer and managing director of commercial operations for the Port of Long Beach, Dr. Noel Hacegaba; the senior vice president and chief commercial officer for Ceres Terminals Incorporated, Bruce E. Cashon; and the executive director of the Agriculture Transportation Coalition, Peter Friedmann.
According to Ms. Decas, the session will be more of a dialogue between leading freight industry experts than a series of formal presentations. “The goal here is to highlight effective partnerships and collaborative initiatives that are being used to enhance the movement of goods,” she said. “We believe the audience will come away with a better understanding of the issues from a variety of perspectives, and hopefully gain some actionable tips that could reduce the impacts of goods movement challenges at their facilities in the future.”
The three-day convention (Nov. 2-4) is being hosted by PortMiami, a major global logistics hub often cited as the “Cargo Gateway of the Americas.” PortMiami Port Director and CEO Juan M. Kuryla said: “PortMiami is honored to be the host of the 2015 AAPA convention. The convention offers delegates engaging seminars and workshops on challenging matters and opportunities facing our ports.”
