Winners Announced in AAPA’s 2016 IT, Environmental Improvement Programs

Successful entries in the American Association of Port Authorities’ (AAPA) 2016 Environmental Improvement and its Information Technology award competitions have been named following a rigorous entry and selection process.  The winners in these two programs, together with the 24 ports that submitted successful entries in AAPA’s 2016 Communications Awards program (announced on July 18), will be recognized during the awards luncheon on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 26, at AAPA’s 104^th Annual Convention and Exposition in New Orleans, which runs Nov. 23-26 and is being hosted by the Port of New Orleans.

“We appreciate every entrant and congratulate every winner in this year’s AAPA awards programs—Environmental Improvement, Information Technology, and Communications – for investing the time to share their work, get peer review from the judges and highlight best practices and lessons learned,” said Kurt Nagle, AAPA president and CEO. “When port authorities work with their many audiences, including their communities, business leaders and policymakers, to develop projects like the ones entered into these competitions, they’re better able to demonstrate their tremendous value as drivers of economic development, environmental enhancement and job creation.”

AAPA’s Information Technology Awards program, which began in 2002, highlights port technology accomplishments in the areas of Port Operations and Management Systems and in Improvements in Intermodal Freight Transportation.  This year’s IT Awards program winner in the Improvements in Intermodal Freight Transportation category is the Halifax Port Authority for its submission, The Big Lift – Air Gap Monitoring During Bridge Reconstruction Project.  Winning in the Port Operations and Management Systems category this year is the Port of Los Angeles with its entry, Achieving an ISO 27001 Information Security Management System.

Since 1973, AAPA’s Environmental Improvement Awards program has recognized activities which benefit the environment at its member ports. This year’s awards program had winners in three of the four project entry categories: 1) Environmental Enhancement; 2) Mitigation; and 3) Comprehensive Environmental Management.

The winner in the 2016 Environmental Improvement Awards’ Environmental Enhancement category is the Port of Long Beach for its entry, Beneficial Reuse of Dredged Sediments in the Middle Harbor Slip 1 Fill.

The winner of AAPA’s 2016 Environmental Improvement Awards’ Mitigation category is Maryland Port Administration, with its successful project, Baltimore Inner Harbor Water Wheel.

Winning the 2016 Environmental Improvement Awards’ Comprehensive Environmental Management award is the Port of Tacoma with its entry, Stormwater Management Guidance Manual: Customizing and Optimizing Stormwater Requirements for Port-Specific Land Uses and Customers.
