31 Seaports Selected for Honors in AAPA's Annual Communications Awards Program

Port of Tacoma Wins Top Award For Second Straight Year

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (July 2, 2007) - The leading organization representing public ports in the Western Hemisphere-American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA)-has selected 31 seaports to be recognized for exemplary public relations at its 41st annual Port Awards luncheon on Oct. 3.  The awards luncheon, which recognizes achievements in communications, environmental improvement, information technology and facilities engineering, will be held in conjunction with AAPA's 2007 Annual Convention in Norfolk, Va., Sept. 30-Oct. 4. 

Winners of AAPA's environmental improvement, facilities engineering and information technology awards programs will be announced later this summer.

This year's communications awards competition attracted 194 entries from 38 ports in the United States and Canada.  Thirty-two public relations professionals from the Washington, D.C.-area spent a combined 150 hours judging the entries at AAPA headquarters in Alexandria, Va.  In total, the judges marked 82 entries for honors, including 17 for an Award of Excellence, 42 for an Award of Merit and 23 for an Honorable Mention.

To acknowledge the most outstanding performer in the competition, each year AAPA presents a trophy in the form of a large glass globe to the port that earns the most award points from the independent public relations judges.  For the second year in a row, the Dan Maynard Communications Award for Overall Excellence will be presented to the Port of Tacoma, which was selected for winning four Awards of Excellence - in the categories of videos, annual reports, periodicals and special events - and three Awards of Merit - in the categories of periodicals, promotional literature and miscellaneous.  The award was renamed by AAPA's Public Relations Committee in 2004 after the late Dan Maynard, the committee's former colleague and communications director for the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey.
