PPM Residency Report – Hamburg, Germany

This paper is based on an executive residency experience with the Port of Hamburg Marketing organization during April/May 2019. The objective was to understand the activities and governance of the organization, its best practices and resources, and identify any special learning realizations from the uniqueness of this model. The key question is: “Can the Port of Hamburg model be adapted in the environment of a typical AAPA-member port authority?” The paper concludes that the long-established culture that Hamburg stakeholders rally and align around is the key to this model. The culture of teamwork that exists, contains lessons for any North American port authority looking to harness the contribution of time, talent and money of its stakeholders to galvanize a successful and dynamic program to promote and progress as a port community.
