Applicability of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in the Maritime Industry and Port Management

The objective of this paper is to introduce the concepts of AI and Machine Learning and specifically to their potential application in Port Operations, Planning, Scheduling, and Traffic Safety. The goal is to make a complicated and mathematically heavy subject easier to understand for a non-technical audience. There is a lot of information (and misinformation) on the internet, as well as from various vendors offering their solutions, and the goal of the paper is to help maritime professionals to make a more informed evaluation of the applicability and validity of the information or products in their own situation.
